May 7, 2009 by
Filed under Edmonton Hip Hop, Events

Due to the overwhelming success and sponsorship of the Hip Hop in the Park Silent Auction, we have decided to run this event over two weeks. Come support local Hip Hop and bid on some of the awesome stuff we scored for you to take home.

Also, Rhymesayers Entertainment just released Abstract Rude’s “Rejuvenation” on May 5th, 2009. The artist notorious for his affiliations with his early beginnings with The Project Blowed Crew and later with Myka 9 and Aceyalone as 1/3 of the Haiku D’Etat crew, Ab is no stranger to hip hop. He was later frontman for the crew Abstract Tribe Unique. Before Rhymesayers he was signed to The Beastie Boys label “Grand Royal Imprint” but is now signed to the Minneapolis label where he churned out his latest with Seattle Producer Extraordinaire “Vitamin D”. On May 13th, WSWs has got the hook up and we will be giving away free “Rejuvenation” CDs and will have posters and stickers for you to take home as well. If you pick up the CD soon, you will also nab a VERY LIMITED download card for all of the songs on instrumental. Check it out at >>>

[Poizunus]

Poizunus is a Vocal Dj/Beatboxer from Toronto, with beat patterns and vocal turntable techniques that make you wonder if everything you hear is really coming from this man’s mouth. As a child, Poizunus struggled with a speech impediment but after speech therapy, he learned to control his voice while speaking. Overcoming this obstacle has been a great achievement for this talented MC who is now mastering beats and creating all types of sound effects with his voice.

Amalgamating the new and old world of beatboxing, Poizunus has been spitting beats ever since he was a curious young boy who stumbled upon his cousin’s hip-hop tape collection. Music has always inspired this Toronto native who is influenced by his parents collections of soulful music.

In 2004, Poizunus performed at New York City’s 2nd Annual Human Beatbox Convention. The next year he competed in Germany’s Hip-Hop World Challenge, in which he placed in the top 3. Internationally renown beatboxer Killa Kela has reportedly stated that he regards Poizunus as his favorite beatboxer from the battle.

This past year Poizunus has been taking the Canadian music scene by storm. Canada’s Music station “MuchMusic” featured him on the show “Music Is My Life” and followed him around the city of Vancouver where he took 1st Place at the 604 Hip Hop Expo Beatbox Battle. Since then he’s Appeared on numerous television spots such as; Going Coastal, Breakfast Television, RapCity, MTV Live and also been featured in two MuchVibe commercials.

In addition to his past success, Poizunus has toured the United Kingdom in 2005 and performed live with UK Beatbox Legend Killa Kela and US DMC Champ DJ Craze at the Winter Music Conference in 2006. He also just recently took home 1st place at 2007′s Scribble Jam 2007 Beatbox Battle. You may have also seen him open for acts such as Method Man, Dj Jazzy Jeff, Dj Evil Dee, C-Rayz Walz, Obie Trice, Lloyd Banks, Jim Jones, The Cool Kids, Choclair, Classified, Maestro and Kardinal Offishall.

[Plex]

A daring emcee, artist and entrepreneur from Edmonton, Alberta, Doug Bedard AKA Plex has taken his experience of growing up on North-side Beverly streets to the masses with a message 15 years in the making about competing to survive adversity and ultimately rising to the top.

Living in a duplex through adolescence, people began to refer to him as “Doug from the Duplex” eventually shortening the epithet to Plex. With a distinct ear for music and hunger to be a part of the scene he turned on the drive, resulting in the creation of a career permitting him to groom and reshape artists with similar ambitions ready to compete on a global level.

CEO and President of the Toronto-based record and entertainment label, New Leaf Entertainment is a vertically integrated company armed with experienced industry leaders Jay Laronde, Leemai Lafontaine and Jennifer Podemski.

He is one of the founding members of Edmonton’s celebrated group Won 18 which is also set to release an album in 2009, an anticipated follow up to their successful album “The Dirty Boulevard” released in 2006.

Plex is set to release his first solo album “Brainstorm” in 2009 – a culturally relevant and lyrically proficient album that challenges popular opinion. It refuses to sugarcoat experiences or preach lessons learned. It begs you to get up and groove to well thought out beats and sing along to lyrics crafted long before their time. This album is motivating, bold, and entertaining in equal measure.

[Brandon Brown]

In the modern musical landscape of pop stars and recycled ideas many adult hip-hop fans can at times feel disenfranchised and frustrated when it comes to finding quality music and origanal concepts. Enter Brandon Brown a veteran MC/SONGWRITER from the northside of Edmonton. The self proclaimed “hip- hop cop” has seen enough of the bubble gum beats and shallow topics and feels the only thing that can save hip-hop is hip-hop itself! “I think the history of the music and hip-hop culture as a whole has been self-policing since its inception,” offers Brown, “but we as a community are slipping and letting these cats get away with murder, the murder of hip-hop”.

Brandon has been performing under the name Butta for 14 years, along the way having the opportunity to do shows along side artists such as RUN DMC, DEL THA FUNKEE HOMOSAPIEN, BLACK SHEEP, SNOOP DOGG,PHARCYDE, as well as fellow Canadian MCs K-OS, CHOCLAIR,THA RASCALZ,KARDINAL and MAESTRO just to name a few. Recently the urge to change his name was something he finally sucumbed to and Brandon Brown was born.”It really is a representation of a turning point in my life in and outside of the music.” Part of the turning point in Brandon’s life has been his recent relocation to Toronto and the release of his highly-anticipated solo debut on NewLeaf Records due out late summer ’07. As of yet untitled album will be a merge of hip-hop,blues,rock and soul that will underscore Browns topicaly diverse concepts. With production from fellow NewLeaf artist PLEX and appearances by GEORGE LEACH on guitar the album promises to be a window into the evolution of the culture and more importantly the world as a whole.

[Max Prime]

The intellectual MC of Low Budget Affiliate famerecently released “Sufferance” a jaded work of mind twisting self-analysis, Sufferance delivers something dark and hard-core for the boom-bap junkies that know the pain jadedness inflicts. Those of you unfamiliar with Max Prime, he is a Canadian prairies MC who’s span of accomplishments include 2 pressed albums (Hardly Novices and Minstrel Cycles), a group album with his crew the LBA (Damage is Done), and accolades from winning freestyle battles at a young age. Recorded after 2 intense years working graveyard shift in the heavy labor industry, observing his co-worker’s lives go to waste through misdirection in rural Alberta, Max executes a message of intense psychological warning to the surfeited and wearied, lost within reward-less lives. His own problems become the subjects of his lecture, and as usual, battle lyric delivery laces the project with Max’s signature philosophy of ferocity. Completely self produced and personal, Sufferance is a free offering to the online hip hop community. Download it from his revamped website and immerse yourselves.
