The 20/20 Project is a Toronto based hip hop group consisting of three members, D-Squared (Emcee), Idrees (Emcee) and DJ Unknown (DJ/Producer). Their sound is rooted in traditional hip hop, focusing on up-tempo, drum heavy beats, sharp rhymes, and Dj cuts.
The very essence of The 20/20 Project starts with the MuchMusic Video Award Nominated DJ Unknown (Producer, Tru-Paz, Hotel Hell). He is best known in hip hop circles as the production genius behind the roots reggae and hip hop group Tru-Paz. Unknown’s skills go beyond the typical DJ and beatmaker. DJing since the age of 13, Unknown references his influence close to home- he credits his father, a DJ and radio broadcaster, as his primary influence. His diverse musical interests include everything from Radiohead to Dj Premier, Led Zepplin to Steele Pulse. DJ Unknown’s production has been associated with not only Tru-Paz, but many other notable artists in North America including Wade O’Brown, Justice, Exco Levi, Ski, Blessed and Crown-A-Thornz among others.
D-Squared jumped on the scene appearing on Tru-Paz first LP “R-Evolution” on the tracks “Money is a Thriller” and “Penalty Shots” and appeared on their second album “State of Emergency” on the track “Feel This” – garnering regular radio play on Flow 93.5. Citing his influences from old school emcees such as Rakim, KRS, Chuck D and Kane, D comes off harshly smooth with punctuated battle rhymes and story telling raps. D-Squared and DJ Unknown have been friends for 25+ years and have recently decided to start recording music seriously, resulting in The 20/20 Project.
Idrees began his career in rural North Bay, ON, releasing albums and mixtapes and developing a small but loyal fan base. Equipped with raspy-baritone vocals, Idrees has been compared to veteran rappers such as Freddie Foxxx and Fredro Starr. An admitted fan of Tru-Paz, Idrees relocated to Toronto, ON and got in touch with DJ Unknown at a local venue the group was performing at. From that day forward, DJ Unknown and Idrees began working on tracks for Idrees’ solo endeavors.
While working on their own projects for digital singles and mixtapes with the mutual aid of DJ Unknown’s production, D-Squared and Idrees collaborated on each other’s solo tracks and decided to take their chemistry to the next level – this being The 20/20 Project . With two solid forces and a DJ/ Producer to bind them together, The 20/20 Project is an unstoppable trio that blends social commentaries and conscience vibes as well as the old school ‘boom bapp’ that we’ve all grown to love. The 20/20 Project is most definitely a fresh new voice in the Canadian Hip Hop scene
