There is now an organizing committee for an Edmonton chapter of the extremely popular King Of The Dot MC Battle League. It’s like a rap wrestling league with pre-written battles filmed and broadcast online. Oh, and sometimes money (not a belt) is put on the line.
KOTD battlers have about a month’s notice of their opponents (to dig up some dirt and come up with some great punchlines). Each battle is comprised of three one-minute rounds (a capella) and winners are decided by a panel of four indiscriminate judges. Only one battle per MC per event, so it’s not like you have a whole lot to commit to except crushing the opponent in front of you.
All battles end up on kingofthedot.com, where you can check out previous battles, study the vibe and feel out the style.

Info: In an era where most hip-hop artists claim to ‘break new ground’ or ‘challenge the boundaries’, yet more often than not only deliver on diluted retreads of stale rap clichés, Canadian/American duo The Nope (Psy of the Oddities and Moka Only) offer a different approach: they drop all pretence of treading new waters. As The Nope emcee Psy shares, “We’re exactly the same as every other music group you’ve ever heard before. So, prepare for absolute boredom.” For once, a rapper tells the truth. (more…)

Info: The OK Cobra story is a bit of a lurid one. Though one shouldn’t expect much less from Fritz Tha Cat. The notorious gonzo-rap journalist known as much for his drunken late night escapades as for his musical accolades – namely his highly respectable defunct ‘zine In Search of Divine Styler and his long-running Vice Magazine column (ending in the early 2000’s). Yet, the group OK Cobra is where Fritz finds his true passion. Combined with production partner Recordface – the duo return after a 3-year hiatus with their sophomore follow-up to the acclaimed self-titled debut with URBNET Records – their opus – Delirium Tremens.
