Event: Mos Def – The Ecstatic Tour, Edmonton

August 21, 2009 by

TICKETS ALSO AT BLACKBYRD, FOOSH AND SOULAR

Mos Def is an Emmy and Golden Globe nominated American actor, as well as a Grammy nominated musician. In the late 1990s, many considered him to be hip-hop’s savior. It was a ridiculous expectation, but it also reflects the intelligence, charisma and emotion that the emcee puts into his music. In 1998 he teamed up with Talib Kweli for the excellent Black Star LP, followed by his classic solo disc, Black on Both Sides. The most appealing aspect of Mos’s lyrics wasn’t that they largely focused on issues of class and race disparity, but that they infused an emotional poignancy to these potentially dry and pedantic
topics. As a solo artist his other albums include, The New Danger, True Magic and his recently
anticipated release, The Ecsatic. Mos Def can also be found lending his voice on songs by Kanye West, The Roots and De La Soul, and production on Canadas own, Knaan. Fans felt his style was a viable alternative to stagnant mainstream hip-hop fare, but while he was entrusted with the keys to the underground rap kingdom, he rejected cult status and instead focused on his budding acting career and since the early 2000s has established himself as one of only a handful of rappers who have garnered critical approval for their acting work. You can find Mos Def in The Italian Job, 16 Blocks, Cadillac Records, Brown Sugar, Be Kind Rewind and more.
